Catalyst Education of Colorado is a high school program that can serve troubled teen-parents in Boulder County and along the Front Range. Not long ago, if a high school girl became pregnant, she dropped out of school or quietly received an abortion. Today, it is more likely that a high school aged girl – with or without the support of her partner and her family – will try to stay in school through the pregnancy and child rearing. There are some adequate public school options for teen parents. If the logistics of attending the free program makes that option too difficult or if “adequate” is considered insufficient, Catalyst EDU is worth considering.
There are some pros and cons to consider when a teen parent is looking into Catalyst EDU. Catalyst EDU is beyond comparison for the teen parent who needs to be challenged academically or needs a very flexible schedule. On the other hand, while parenting skills are included in our curriculum, we would consider it “basic”, and we would require that the student be involved with agencies whose expertise is supporting pregnant women and young parents. (We would grant high school credit for that involvement.) Also, Catalyst EDU does not have child care, so the teen parent will need to have day care outside of school, if Catalyst is to be selected as the high school.

"Not only is this the first and only high school that worked for Sarah, it’s the most focused I’ve seen her in twelve years of education.”
-- Chris, father of a current student
